Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) is considered as the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was a Romanticist painter and is often cited as one of the last Old Masters and one of the first modern artists. Goya used his art to reflect the tumultuous events of his day, including events like the liberations of the Enlightenment, the suppressions of the Inquisition, and the horrors of war following the Napoleonic invasion. His late paintings are among the darkest of his creations and contain images of despair, violence, and, evil. Famous examples of his work that you can bring home as prints include "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, from Los Caprichos," print which was created to illustrate the foibles of civilized society that invade the mind when reason is surrendered to dream and "The Dog," the original of which is now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.Show more
