A Brush of Passionate Intensity
Vincent Van Gogh (1853 – 1890), a Dutch Post-Impressionist Master, is regarded as one of the most profoundly influential artists of the 19th century. His innovative artwork powerfully influenced modern Expressionism, Fauvism, and early abstraction.

Astoundingly prolific, Van Gogh produced all of his work during a 10-year period – at one point, creating 150 paintings and drawings within one year. Favorite subjects included expressive landscapes, portraits and still lifes. Tormented by mental illness for most of his life, Van Gogh created many of his masterpieces while institutionalized.

Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime: “The Red Vineyards at Arles, c.1888”. He died at the age of 37 after shooting himself in the chest. Though he would never realize the success of his art, Van Gogh's emotional approach, vivid colors, and rough brush strokes have had a far-reaching impact. Many of his prints are among the most recognizable and expensive in the world.
