Wasp. Close-up of a common adult worker wasp Vespula vulgaris. Wasps are social insects, rearing their young in paper nests made by chewing up wood pulp. They typically feed on insects and carrion. This high protein meat is also fed to the larvae. When autumn approaches and new queens mate and prepare to hibernate over winter, the workers gradually succumb to the colder weather. It is at this time that they turn their attention to fruit and other sweet materials. The wasp's sting (at the end of its abdomen, not visible here) can inject venom into the skin. Pain and swelling result but stings are only dangerous in cases of allergy or obstruction to the windpipe.
