Distant galaxies. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image showing a multitude of very faint and very distant galaxies discovered during a Deep Field exposure. This view, equivalent to about 1100th of the diameter of the full Moon, shows objects as faint as 30th magnitude (about 4 billion times fainter than the limit of human vision). Generally, bluer objects contain young stars or are relatively close, whilst redder objects are older andor are further away. The bright white object near centre is a foreground star. The image was assembled from over 200 separate exposures, and approximates to true colour.
