Tomoe Gozen (c. 11571247) female samurai warrior (onnabugeisha) known for her bravery and strength especially at the Battle of Awazu in 1184 where she fought alongside her lover the Genji leader Minamoto no Yoshinaka to defeat Uchida Ieyoshi and Hatakeyama Shigetada. The Meiji Restoration of 1868 ended the Tokugawa shogunate but the popularity of samurai legend remained.
