Socrates and Alcibiades, 1914, by Kristian Zahrtmann, 1843-1917, Danish painting, oil on canvas. Late in life Zahrtmann created homoerotic paintings of nude men, including Socrates and Alcibiades, in 1911. The exact historical nature of his relationship with Alcibiades is not clear. Socrates was known for his self-restraint, while Alcibiades admitted in the Symposium that he had tried to seduce Socrates but failed. Plutarch and Plato describe Alcibiades as Socratess beloved, the former stating that Alcibiades feared and reverenced Socrates alone, and despised the rest of his lovers. According to Plutarch, Socrates, was one of the aristocratic Alcibiades teachers. (BSLOC_2023_4_27)
