Scimitar cats attacking a horse, artists impression. The scimitar cat (Homotherium latidens) was a member of the sabretoothed cat family (Machairodontinae) which lived throughout Africa, Eurasia and North America between 3 million to 10,000 years ago. At one time its prey would have included early species of horse such as Equus stenonis seen here.
