Sayyid Barghash Bin Said, Sultan of Zanzibar, 1875. Barghash bin Said ruled Zanzibar from 1870 until 1888. Much of the infrastructure of Stone Town, the old part of Zanzibar City, dates from his reign, the last in which Zanzibar enjoyed true independence from European control.
