Shards of gold, graphite, blue and white slice the surface of Lyonel Feininger’s “Sailing Boats.” Feininger (1871 – 1956) is known for his meticulously painted ships, buildings, locomotives and seascapes, which are made up entirely of straight lines and intersecting planes of color and light. Influenced by Cubism and Orphism, Feininger spent his youth in New York City, and later lived in Germany, where he created caricatures for humor magazines. Feininger taught at Germany’s Bauhaus and exhibited with the Blaue Reiter Expressionists until the Nazis exiled him for works they considered “degenerate.” Feininger’s highly acclaimed art has received awards from New York’s Metropolitan Museum and the Worcester Museum.
