Paramecium. Light micrograph of the singlecelled protozoan Paramecium caudatum. This animal has cilia (short hairlike structures, not seen) on the surface of its cell membrane which enable it to swim with an upwards, spiralling motion. It is an elongated oval shape with a groovelike mouth (white, centre left). P. caudatum is found mainly in stagnant ponds, feeding on bacteria and plant material. It breeds by cell division, forming two identical daughter cells. Dark field illumination. Magnification unknown.

Psst! Did you know chimpanzees, elephants, and dolphins are some of the most intelligent mammals out there?
