Our Lady of Guadalupe, 1691, unknown artist, Mexican painting, oil on canvas. According to tradition, this image which was miraculously imprinted on the Indian’s cloak in 1531, is the same icon venerated today at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. On the corners are four scenes of its divine origin: The Virgin’s three appearances to the Indian Juan Diego at Tepeyac, near Mexico City, and the culminating revelation of her image imprinted on his cloak.
