Orson Welles, American actor and film director, 30 October 1938. Welles (1915-1985) photographed after his the broadcast of a radio dramatisation of The War of the Worlds, by HG Wells, which sparked off a panic amongst listeners who believed they were listening to a description of a real alien invasion.
