Falsecolour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the Gramnegative bacteria Neisseria meningitis (meningococcus), which causes cerebrospinal fever (spotted fever) & bacterial meningitis in humans. A spherical bacteria, or coccus, it is commonly found growing in pairs or clumps. The bacteria is transmitted from person to person in droplets of mucus from a patient or carrier.
