It remained in the hands of the Spaniards until 1655, when the English secured it, since which time it has continued a dependency of the English Crown. Its capital, Kingston, is located on the southern coast. The town was founded in 1693, and is built on a plain which rises from the shore with a gradual ascent to the foothills of the Liguanea Mountains. Its population is estimated at 40,000, about threefourths of which are blacks. The chief retail business avenue is called Harbour Street, and Port Royal Street is the chief thoroughfare for wholesale traffic, adjoining the wharves which line the harbour of the town.
