Joseph Priestley (17331804), British chemist and Christian minister. Priestley was the first to isolate oxygen and the first to suggest a connection between blood and air, although he did so using phlogiston theory. This statue depicts him holding a magnifying glass and a pestle and mortar. Priestley was born in Birstal, Yorkshire, UK. He was a minister at Mill Hill Chapel, Leeds.
