Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German poet, dramatist and scientist, c1830. Goethe (1749-1832) was a novelist, dramatist, poet, humanist, scientist, philosopher, and for ten years chief minister of state at Weimar. He is best known for his dramatic poem Faust, completed in 1832. (Colorised black and white print).
