Black Framed Canvas

Inner ear hair cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of sensory hair cells from the organ of Corti, in the cochlea of a mammalian inner ear. These are the outer rows of hairs and are surrounded by a fluid called the endolymph. As sound enters the ear it causes waves to form in the endolymph, which in turn cause these hairs to move. The movement is converted into an electrical signal, which is passed to the brain. Each Vshaped arrangement of hairs lies on the top of a single cell.
