Shocked by the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, Dali painted “Idylle Atomique,” introducing the concept of “nuclear” or “atomic” painting. A Surrealist pioneer and child prodigy, Dali (1904 – 1989) created disquieting and expertly detailed work containing Freudian dream symbolism, such as the eggs and spindly legged elephants in “Idylle Atomique.” Considered one of the 20th century’s greatest artists, Dali produced 1,500 paintings, along with sculpture, drawings, films, clothing and jewelry.
