Hydrogen bomb explosion. Mushroom cloud produced by the detonation of XX33 Romeo, an 11megaton thermonuclear bomb, on 26 March 1954. This was one of a series of six detonations carried out during Operation Castle in the Bikini Atoll Proving Grounds in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific Ocean. XX33 Romeo was detonated from a barge on the atoll rim. It was the third largest test ever detonated by the USA. Atomic or nuclear bombs work by releasing the energy in the nucleus of an atom. Fusion bombs contain isotopes of hydrogen that are fused together by heat created in a fission chain reaction. The fusion releases heat and radiation.
