Original caption: Adlington Hall, Cheshire, is one of the latest of the great homes of England to be made available for public inspection. It is unique in the fact that for 635 years the hall has been in the possession of the same family - the De Leghs. The hall today stands on a site that in Saxon times was used as a hunting lodge in the forest of Macclesfield. After the Norman Conquest it passed to Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, and nephew of William the Conqueror, and as "Edulvinstane" is mentioned in the Domesday Book. In the 13th century it was granted to the Norman family of De Corona, and it is from their unity with the De Leghs of Booth that the present occupants are descended. Successive generations of the De Leghs have carried out additions and alterations, but the hall still retains a great many features of interest.
