Glacier des Bossons. A glacier is a huge mass of ice formed from compacted snow, moving slowly over a land mass. Glacier des Bossons in the French Alps, is the longest glacier in Europe, measuring around 7 kilometres in length. It is also one of the steepest, with an average inclination of 45 degrees. Where a glacier descends steeply, an icefall often occurs, causing the ice to tumble and crevasses to open. In the background, is the summit of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in western Europe at over 4800 metres. Photographed from Chamonix, France.
