Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) on sea ice. The gentoo penguin grows up to 70 centimetres tall and can weigh up to 6 kilograms. It feeds on plankton, fish and squid, diving for up to 7 minutes and as deep as 210 metres. Its relatively large size and elongated bill allows it to feed on larger prey than many other penguins. It lives in large colonies on bare hillsides and beaches. It is found on subantarctic islands and the Antarctic peninsula. The species was extensively hunted for its skin and oil, but is now protected and the population is stable. Photographed at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands.
