Fractured shoulder. Coloured Xray of a 3 year old boys fractured shoulder. The humerus (upper arm bone, upper centre) articulates with the scapula (shoulder blade, upper right) to form a ball and joint socket. Above the scapula is the clavicle (collarbone), which articulates with the scapula. This injury was due to physical abuse. The bone will be immobilised, either externally, using a cast, or internally, using metal pins, to allow it to heal. It is important that a bone is correctly aligned if it is to heal properly and avoid future complication.
