An automatic soda fountain has been invented by Paul Maiwurm, chemical engineer in San Diego, California, after three years of development. The electro-magnetic machine stands nine feet high, eight feet wide and three feet deep. Eight different kinds of syrup are contained in glass storage tanks which have a capacity for serving 3000 persons at one filling. It is virtually a bottling plant inside an automatic fountain. The machine is operated by dropping a coin in the slot, which closes an automatic switch, producing a magnetic friction contact that lifts the water and the syrup separately and simultaneously. Both water and syrup are accurately measured and thoroughly mixed, affording a uniform drink. Syrup and water pass over a refrigeration plant which is also electrically operated, and contained within the machine. The entire operation takes only five second
