Silverfish. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a silverfish (Lepisma saccha rina). These primitive insects have remained unchanged for millions of years, and are considered living fossils. The head of this insect is covered in sensory hairs, and its mouthparts (purple) are seen. It has two long antennae which protrude from its head at upper left and right. They are covered in tiny shiny scales which give them their common name. Silverfish are bristlet ails of the order Thysanura. Silverfish are common household pests, feeding on spilled food such as flour and sugar. They may grow to two centimetres in length. Magnification: x25 at 6x7cm size.

Keep your furry and feathery friends close, whether they are a galloping stallion or a dog taking a selfie. Our gallery is here to turn empty walls into a cute and quirky display of animal art.

Psst! Did you know chimpanzees, elephants, and dolphins are some of the most intelligent mammals out there?
