Hodgkins disease. Coloured light micrograph (LM) of a section through lymphoid tissue of the lymph node showing Hodgkins disease, a type of cancer. Characteristic of this condition are the cancerous ReedSternberg cells (at far left for example) which contain two nuclei. In Hodgkins disease or lymphoma, unchecked cell growth within the germinal centre of the follicle leads to lymph node enlargement, fever and loss of appetite. Treatment is by radiotherapy or anticancer drugs. Lymph nodes filter harmful organisms from tissue fluid. Haemotoxylin and Eosin stained cells. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size.
