Satellite launch sequence diagram. This sequence shows a telecommunications satellite being launched from the equator into geostationary orbit (yellow circle). This orbit, at an altitude of 35,786 kilometres above the Earth, allows the satellite to complete one orbit in the same amount of time as the Earth turns, so the satellite remains stationary over a fixed point on the equator. The initial launch is with the main stage of the rocket, with boosters shown either side. After this, second and further stages boost the satellite still higher. Once in a stable orbit, the solar panels (blue) unfold to provide power.
