Salmonellalike bacterium. Illustration of a rod shaped bacterium with numerous flagellae, as seen under an electron microscope. It closely resembles Salmonella sp. , the bacteria largely responsible for food poisoning in humans (salmonellosis). One species of Salmonella causes typhoid fever. The hairlike flagellae are used for motility. When large numbers of Salmonella sp. are eaten with contaminated food, particularly meat, milk and eggs, they produce a gastrointestinal infection which in some cases can be fatal. Symptoms of salmonellosis include vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal pain. Magnification: unknown.
