Aries. Artwork of a ram drawn over stars in the constellation Aries. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, listed by Ptolemy in A. D. 140. The stars it contains are said to be laid out in the shape of a ram, which represents the ram of the golden fleece sought by Jason in classical mythology. 2000 years ago the Suns position at the vernal (spring) equinox lay in this constellation, but this has now moved into Pisces.
