After Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli charted channels on Mars, American astronomer Percival Lowell, misinterpreted the Italian “channel” to mean canals. In 1894, he suggested that the canals must have been the work of intelligent beings and the possibility of life on Mars captured American imaginations. This sheet music cover is part of the Sam DeVincent Collection of Illustrated American Sheet Music. Sam DeVincent, born in Chicago in 1918, was picking out tunes on the piano by age six and was collecting song sheets and music books by about age ten.
