British runner Roger Bannister sets a new standard for speed in “Four Minute Mile.” Running a mile in less than four minutes —a feat previously thought to be impossible—Bannister clocked in at 3 minutes 59.4 seconds at Oxford’s Iffley Road Track in 1954, setting the standard for all professional middle-distance runners. Honored by Sports Illustrated as its first Sportsman of the Year, Bannister later became a renowned neurosurgeon, and was knighted in 1975.
