A master botanical painter, Johann Theodore de Bry displayed his gift for realism, grace and detailing in “Butterflies and Blossoms II.” Initially, de Bry (1561 – 1623) assisted his father in illustrating the famous “Great Voyages” travel narratives, which were crucial to the Age of Discovery. De Bry is best-know for his illustrated flower books, and two volumes were considered the most beautiful of his era. Tulips—exotic flowers newly imported from Turkey—were the sole subject of one of De Bry’s books.

This print is individually colored using traditional European methods. Starting with a black and white reproduction on heavy, cotton rag paper, artists apply paint using the finest watercolors. Subtle differences may appear in each print.
