In “Special Pleader” by Victorian painter Charles Burton Barber (1845 – 1894), a distressed collie appears to beg for a reprieve for his punished playmate. A graduate of London’s Academy Schools, Barber was admired for his realistic, poignant paintings of children with dogs. He painted Queen Victoria’s canine companions for almost 25 years, as well as many other royal dogs. He also illustrated children’s books and experimented with photography.
