Socrates’ commitment to his ideals is portrayed with grace and dignity in the masterpiece, “The Death of Socrates,” by Jacques-Louis David (1748 – 1825). David portrays Socrates as an unjustly persecuted, principle-bound father figure through his ingenious use of light and dark accents. David unveiled this painting, whose virtuosity has been compared to that of Michelangelo and Raphael, as a call to arms on the eve of the French Revolution.
