Jesus Christ is sensitively portrayed as a being of great love and compassion in “Suffer the Little Children” by Ford Madox Brown. Known for his historic and religious themes, Brown (1821 – 1893) painted this celestially lit work depicting Jesus blessing children to assist their entrance to heaven. A non-conformist who believed that art kept him alive, Brown established the one-man art show and the Pre-Raphaelite movement, but never joined the Brotherhood. Brown was commissioned to decorate Manchester Hall, which was the pinnacle of his artistic career. Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
