The towering waves in Ando Hiroshige’s “View from Satta Saruga” convey the power of the mystical Mount Fuji which rises, secluded, in the background. Known for his exquisite landscapes, Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) created this work with Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock printing as part of a 36-part series inspired by a surge in travel around Japan as well as his own obsession with Mount Fuji. Creating an incredible 5,400 prints in his lifetime, this series brought Hiroshige international acclaim for his poetic depictions of the Japanese landscape.
