Phillips Holmes followed his parents into the acting business, dabbling in films as a youth up until he joined the Canadian Royal Air Force during World War II. Holmes received great reviews for his role in the film adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's 'An American Tragedy,' and his star was still on the rise before his untimely death in the war. This photograph, from a series that George Hoyningen-Huené took of the actor in the 1930s, is from the Condé Nast Archive.
