Actress Merle Oberon, born Estelle Merle O'Brien Thompson, grew up in India before moving to London and, later, Hollywood. She starred in The Private Life of Henry VIII, the first British film to be nominated for an Academy Award, and was nominated for a best actress Oscar in 1935 for her role as Kitty Vane in The Dark Angel. This photograph, by Cecil Beaton, appeared in the October 1934 Vanity Fair.
