Having begun her career as a child actress, Fay Bainter went on to become a member of the legendary impresario David Belasco's theater company and win roles in such plays as 'East Is West,' in 1919, and 'Two Orphans,' in 1926. She also won an Oscar, in 1938, for her supporting role in the film 'Jezebel.' Here, she is photographed onstage in Asian costume by James Abbé in the March 1919 Vanity Fair.
