The silent-screen actor John Gilbert, equally adept at playing the handsome leading man and the dark villain, gained attention for his starring role in 1925's The Big Parade. Later, Gilbert made headlines with his very public affair with Greta Garbo, whom he met while filming Flesh and the Devil. Gilbert, looking dapper in a suit and tie, sits for Charles Sheeler's camera in this image, which appeared in the June 1926 Vanity Fair.
