Track the construction of the world’s most visited monument. Paris’1,063-foot iron Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel for Paris’ 1889 World’s Fair, and was the forerunner of tall structures containing elevators. Scheduled to be torn down 20 years after its unveiling, it was retained for its valuable broadcasting tower. The acclaimed tower, once criticized as an eyesore, earned Eiffel the nickname “Magician of Iron.”
