Constable (1776 – 1837) lived in England, and based this painting on a Suffolk cottage behind Flatford Mill, rented by farmer Willy Lott. Constable meticulously studied the sky, crafting dozens of cloud sketches outdoors, accurately re-creating their transient quality by jotting down precise details of time and wind direction. Constable painted the final artwork in his London studio. Despite its lack of sales in England, this piece won a Gold Medal when it was exhibited in France.
