“The Gates, Project for Central Park, New York City” is a study by husband-and-wife team Christo and Jean-Claude, renowned for their huge environmental works. The project in Central Park encompassed 7,500, 16-feet tall gateways draped with saffron-colored fabric along 23 miles of park walkways. “The Gates” represent openings in the park’s stone wall originally intended to be fitted with steel gates when the park was built. An exceptional artwork, this preparatory drawing is featured in New York’s Guggenheim Museum.
Christo is a Bulgarian-born environmental installation artist, known for wrapping famous buildings and landmarks with plastic and fabric sheets. He initially wrapped small items, so they would become aesthetically pleasing when their function was hidden. For 30 years, he has collaborated with wife Jeanne-Claude on large-scale installations. Christo and Jeanne-Claude strongly support displaying art outside, so it can reach the largest audience possible.
