“The Conversion of St. Paul, 1601” by Caravaggio shows divine light toppling Saul, the future St. Paul, from his horse as steed and groom remain oblivious to the spiritual force. The painting appears three-dimensional, with Saul in the foreground’s bright light, the lesser figures fading into the surrounding darkness. Blinded, immobilized and clutching at the air, Saul is sightless for three days, but able to see Christ’s message. Caravaggio (1571 – 1610) defied artistic convention, painting this miracle with harsh, unsettling realism.
