Jesus Christ is sensitively portrayed as a being of great love and compassion in “Suffer the Little Children” by Ford Madox Brown. Known for his historic and religious themes, Brown (1821 – 1893) painted this celestially lit work depicting Jesus blessing children to assist their entrance to heaven. A non-conformist who believed that art kept him alive, Brown established the one-man art show and the Pre-Raphaelite movement, but never joined the Brotherhood. Brown was commissioned to decorate Manchester Hall, which was the pinnacle of his artistic career.
