Virtually unaltered since its 9th-century creation, the landmark is a magnetic gathering place for local residents, tourists and photographers. The square was enlarged in 1177 and intricately paved, and is now surrounded by Napoleonic-era buildings and the Grand Canal. St. Mark’s Square is the only area of a European city in which conversation is noisier than traffic.
