A terrible disappointment...

      Purchase Reason

      • Inspiration

Rembrandt's self-portrait from Kenwood House was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for several weeks this spring, so I took advantage of this opportunity to go study the original painting in detail. I won't go into the reasons why this portrait is simply extraordinary, both from a human and artistic point of view. Suffice it to say that I wanted a high-quality reproduction as inspiration in my home office. I ordered the most expensive treatment available: the 33in X 40in print on stretched canvas. It arrived soon enough, sooner than expected actually, but it was horribly disappointing. The reproduction is much darker than the original, so dark in fact, that it is almost impossible to identify forms and shapes in the bottom third of the painting. This darkness also affects the back wall, which in the original is off-white, an unusual aspect of this particular work among other portraits by Rembrandt. Finally, for some unexplained reason the reds are accentuated in this reproduction, which has an especially unfortunate effect on Rembrandt's face: he appears drunken, or perhaps sunburned... This is especially disappointing given the glowing description of the giclee print technology provided on the web page.

Another disappointment is that the dimensions of the reproduction do not have the same aspect ratio as those of the original, and this problem was solved by trimming the original. So one does not have a reproduction of the entire original painting. While this is a somewhat more minor flaw than the color problem, it is still a disappointment. At the very least this is a feature that should be mentioned on the web page of AllPosters.

      Service and delivery comments:

The delivery was faster than expected and the product arrived in excellent condition. In spite of the product size, the packaging was light and strong.

      • This giclée print offers beautiful color accuracy on a high-quality paper (235 gsm) that is a great option for framing with its smooth, acid free surface. Giclée (French for “to spray”) is a printing process where millions of ink droplets are sprayed onto the paper’s surface creating natural color transitions. More
      • This premium giclee print, an upgrade from the standard giclee print, is produced on thick (310 gsm), textured watercolor paper made from alpha cellulous wood pulp that is acid free. It shares the same vivid colors, accuracy, and exceptional resolution that make giclee prints the standard for museums and galleries around the world. Giclee (French for 'to spray') is a printing process where millions of ink droplets are sprayed onto a high-quality paper. The smooth transitions of color gradients make giclee prints appear much more realistic than other prints. More
