Original caption: Photo shows an interesting view of the Japanese Capitol showing the famous Imperial Hotel in the foreground. The two wings contain the guest rooms. (The left wing housed the American Embassy in the period following the great quake of 1923). The lower portion between the wings contains the lobby, offices, main dining room, kitchen, etc. The higher part at the rear contains the banquet rooms, ballroom, grill, etc. In the right foreground is one of the three remaining historic daimyo mansion gates still left from the Tokugawa era, when hundreds of daimyos mansions surrounded the Shoguns castle, in the days when Tokyo was Yedo. The Emperors palace is about 14 mile to the left along the avenue seen in the photo.
