Like balloons suspended from slender stalks, orange and gold poppies brilliantly ignite the sky in “Poppy II.” Featured here, the Golden Poppy is California's state flower, reflecting the area's wealth. Native Americans called it the Fire Flower, believing it was sent by the Great Spirit to chase away frost and famine. Considering it a symbol of California’s richness and fertility, the Spanish called it the Cup of Gold. The poppy signified gold to the ’49ers, and many miners believed that wherever its petals fell to the ground, gold was formed.
