A native of San Luis Potosí, Fernando Leal (1896 – 1964) made significant contributions to Mexican art as an artist, teacher, art critic, minister of culture and advocate for artists’ rights. He worked in several media including engraving, lithography and painting, but is best known for his richly colored realistic murals. Leal has the distinction of being one of the first Mexican artists to paint indigenous themes.
